A Pizza and Kebab shop in Burry Port has come under fire from local business owners after someone, allegedly from the business premises at Peppino’s Pizza, tipped a 45 gallon drum of waste oil into the lane at the rear of Stepney Road on the evening of Wednesday (Feb 19).
One business owner who did not wish to be identified said: “Late on Wednesday evening someone from the kebab shop tipped a large barrel of waste oil into the lane off Parc Y Minos street and it quickly ran down into the main street. It was like an ice rink. The smell was bad enough but the mess was awful. The drains became blocked and the rain added to the mess by taking the oil slick out into the road. People are quite angry at what has happened here. The council and highways department came out on Thursday and put down white powder to absorb the oil but that also made a white mess, which was carried into a lot of local businesses.”
Locals and business owners were reticent to speak about the incident. Passers by joked that it looked like snow. The majority of the mess was centred around the Portobello Inn. Council workers were at the site again today, Friday (Feb 21).
The council have been contacted for comment. No one at Peppino’s Pizza was available for comment.
