KIDWELLY or as it is often mistaken for ‘Las Vegas’ of West Wales put on its annual carnival on Saturday (Jul 13).

Elvis, yes Elvis showed up yet again and gave an impromptu performance of ‘Return the Giro’ outside the Chinese Cafe much to the delight of the onlookers. Irish Presley as he is know locally was just one of the many characters in this year’s carnival.

Political giants Donald Trump and Theresa May made an appearance along with a host of comic book heroes, community champions, a flock of unicorns, a dodgy dinosaur, a dragon lady, El Diablo himself and the VIP’s with enough gold to buy the town. Now you see why it gets confused with Las Vegas.

The parade and judging started at Park Stephens with Llanelli’s MP Nia Griffith and AM Lee Waters doing the honours along with other civic dignitaries.

There were the usual stalls selling everything from giant footballs to candy floss. Children enjoyed taking part in the circus skills workshops and the giant bubble making. A small fairground entertained some while others sat around with picnics taking in the sights and sounds including a Samba Band, The Swansea City Pipe Band and a sideshow by Dr. Diablo.

The streets were lined with locals and visitors in anticipation of the parade, which was led by the Town Crier and the local fire service tender.

Stand easy lads: No fire just family fun

The parade went along the main high street up to the castle before returning and making a circuit of the town.

Kidwelly demonstrated that it has plenty of community spirit with yet another successful carnival resulting from almost a year’s work by volunteers in the background.

No fly past this year by the Red Barrows or the Red Arrows but it was a spectacular event all the same.
