What Is Llanelli Online?

Llanelli Online is your one stop shop for news, sport, events and everything Llanelli. We are a hyperlocal site dedicated to Llanelli and the surrounding areas in Carmarthenshire. We do however also focus on international and national news where it is appropriate to the people of Llanelli and our reach has spread throughout the UK.

We provide online news, business, sport, events and community pages.

Why An Online Newspaper?

Newspapers in print are in crisis and large towns like Llanelli risk losing their local, independent coverage of news. Many smaller, independent papers are being bought over by larger conglomerates and then shut down, leaving towns and villages in the dark, risking the values of democracy and freedom of information.

Llanelli Online was born out of necessity when the oldest local newspaper’s website closed and they shut down their offices.

What Do We Do?

We started a community based, online hyperlocal news site, which delivers your news, about your community, to your home, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Llanelli Online is about capturing the local and national news using the latest technology while remaining true to the traditional values of journalism. We have created a Hyperlocal news site that will report exclusively on Llanelli’s news issues, community events and sporting events, as well as being a portal for you to share those things that are important to you and a place to see offers and advertisements from businesses in the surrounding area. Llanelli Online is a local site, for local people, outlining local issues.

What Is Unique About What We Do?

People have turned to Llanelli Online to provide their news service. We provide regional, community-centred news, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the touch of a button or the click of a mouse. We are journalists from Llanelli, living in Llanelli who are fully invested in and committed to the community. We want the people of Llanelli to be able to continue to receive local news, reported by local people, at any time of the day or night. website provides a much needed spotlight on news and events in and around Llanelli

How Does It Work?

If there is a news story we are there. If there is a large sporting event, we are  there. If there is a large community gathering, we are there. Llanelli Online is hyperlocal featuring all that is happening in the community including charity events, court reports, council meetings, community events, grass roots and professional sports, local and national news. As well as being uploaded to the main website, all posts are shared across the main social networks and Llanelli Online also targets large audiences such as schools, community groups, sports teams, large organisations and businesses. Llanelli Online also includes  business section to encourage local people to use and support local businesses.

What Do We Want To Achieve

We created a skeleton site and in the first 6 weeks the site drew 60,000 visitors. Since then we have reached visitor numbers in excess of 220,000 in June 2018. There is a real thirst for local news, told by local people and here at Llanelli Online we believe that we are bucking the trend and catering for a new emerging audience. The site has been listed as a ‘beacon’ for the town by Cardiff University’s School of Journalism.

We want to continue to build Llanelli Online to become a model for hyperlocal sites across the UK We exist for the community of Llanelli. We feature local charity organisations, local businesses, schools and colleges. We want Llanelli Online to grow to become a local employer rejuvenating the media industry in Llanelli and Wales. Our long term aim to reinstate a truly independent local newspaper for the town.

To achieve this, we need your support. As the site grows Llanelli Online hopes to take on graduates in journalism/social media and any other necessary staff members required for the efficient running of the website. We have already taken on and trained a young reporter, Iwan Lewis who has taken up a career in media with the RAF.

Llanelli Online  will become a means of helping to increase employment in the area. We have helped trainee journalists studying at university by offering much needed work placements. We have already designed the new newspaper and with your help Llanelli will receive a brand new title available for free. Your sponsorship would not go unrewarded. The first run will be 10,000 copies. Your advert would be prominently displayed in the paper, on our website, our social media pages and our business promotional materials.

We Value Your Help

So how will we achieve this? To be able to  maintain and progress Llanelli Online, we need your support. We’re not just asking for “something for nothing”. Not only will you be able to benefit from 24/7 local news by local people, we are also offering you amazing rewards, to thank you for your support and so that you can say that you were part of creating Llanelli Online, a valuable, regional news portal.
