Businessman and Community Champion George Parker honoured in Queen’s Birthday Honours List

BUSINESSMAN and community champion George Parker of Parker Plant Hire Ltd has been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the community and business.

Mr Parker has run the company based in Halfway, Llanelli for over 40 years. He started from humble beginnings on a council estate in Llwynhendy.

The businessman has been a supporter of numerous charities in Carmarthenshire often donating large sums of money or equipment to help out local organisations. Among those he supports or has been involved with are; MENCAP, Save Easy Credit Union and The Welsh Guards,

Parker Plant Hire Ltd have provided employment for hundreds of people since the company was established. The company has offices in Llanelli and Cardiff.Mr Parker is known locally as a true gentleman with a very kind heart.

Speaking to Llanelli Online today, Saturday (Oct 10) Mr Parker said: “It was a surprise but also a great honour to receive the award. I have been in business a long time. There have been tough times when recessions hit and you have to have a strong disposition to cope at those times. I found out in June that I had been put forward and from then on I had to keep quiet.

Bestowed with awards from H.M. Queen Elizabeth ll : George Parker and Elizabeth Parker

“Mrs parker received her award for services to education when she was 44-years-old. I am not sure if we are the only couple in Llanelli to both hold an honour from Her Majesty The Queen. I don’t think it will change me, I will always work diligently and offer what support I can to those in the community who need it.

“Mrs Parker is very pleased. I am not sure where I will put the award, maybe in a cabinet rather than on the mantlepiece.I am just so glad to have been selected alongside so many great people who have worked so hard in the NHS and social care sector. I am 72 now and I hope to keep working for a long time to come.”

The Queen has offered special recognition to coronavirus heroes in her Birthday Honours list.

From household names to NHS key workers and Welsh rugby players the monarch has shone a spotlight on Britons’ good deeds during the pandemic. A number of people from Carmarthenshire have been honoured including another Llanelli resident, Paul David Harries who was awarded the MBE for services to Engineering and Employment in West Wales.

Of those who have been honoured, 72 per cent have worked tirelessly for their local communities, reflecting the huge voluntary effort across the country in response to Covid-19.
