Born in Carmarthen in 1944 Roger attended Morfa Infants and Primary School, Pentip School and then Coleshill Secondary Modern. On leaving school he went on to attend Llanelli Technical College.
Roger showed a talent for sport achieving Welsh international schools caps. He was the Welsh junior record holder of the javelin, a record which stood for more than 40 years.
Roger played for the Scarlets in early 60’s and like a lot of union players at that time he was presented with the temptation to ‘go north’ to play for Barrow.
In his professional life Roger became a mechanical engineering designer before becoming a company director and consultant advising manufacturing companies. He is now retired having been married nearly 50 years. He has three children and six grandchildren.
Roger lists his interests as sport, walking and writing. He has in fact successfully published two novels, based in and around Llanelli and is working on a third based in Llanelli and Gallipoli during World War 1. He is a past chairman of Llanelli Writers Circle and past member of Llanelli Art Society.
He may be known best for his outstanding satirical cartoons, which have graced the pages of the newspapers for a number of years but he also produces some outstanding fine art pencil drawings, two of which, you can see here.
He confesses to being ‘politically neutral’ but admits to hating political correctness and evasive politicians
and for want of a better word ‘bullsh**e’.
Llanelli Online has great pleasure in unveiling Roger’s latest ‘Masterpiece’ (no pun intended @CCC), which perfectly captures the mood of a group of campaigners concerned with the possible destruction of what has come to be known as Llanelli’s ‘jewel in the crown’, Parc Howard.
We will be publishing one of Roger’s drawings as a special feature to accompany one of our news items in the weeks to come. Roger has kindly offered to sell prints of his work via Llanelli Online and we will be publishing a gallery and price list here soon. We hope you all agree that this satirical window on the world of Llanelli is something worth sharing. The old saying is “Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone.”
Let us hope that there will not be too many tears shed as we introduce Roger’s first satirical look at the world around us, i.e. from Loughor to Carmarthen and the beautiful land we know as Llanelli.
