Llanelli Online News

Llanelli's First For Hyperlocal News

You’re Hired: Llanelli Online takes on interns

LLANELLI Online recently advertised an intern position.

We received several applications from some very credible candidates. The media industry is going through some major changes. Newspapers are closing offices in towns across the UK.

Llanelli Online has filled a void left behind when the Llanelli Star closed their offices on Cowell Street.

Despite promises of local democracy reporters funded by the BBC the town is yet to see one at a local council meeting or court hearing.

Llanelli Online attended a recent ‘Google Sprint’ event in York along with a number of editors from hyperlocals from across the UK. The message appeared to be the same. Towns abandoned by newspapers, no local reporters and a struggle to sustain existing hyperlocal models because of a lack of funding and in part because local authorities still choose not to advertise or place their public notices on online only news sites.

Iwan Lewis has been with Llanelli Online for the last year and has become part of the furniture. The results of his work are there for all to see online. His passion for sport in particular is evident in his reports on local clubs and indeed the Scarlets, who he followed to the Pro 14 final in Dublin.

Opportunities for budding journalists are scarce, so much so that we decided to take on  interns for 2018/19. We hope they grasp the opportunity and we look forward to seeing the results of their efforts.

We have great pleasure in introducing;

Dafydd Lloyd:

I’m 23-years-old and live in Pontyberem. I’m passionate about delivering up-to-date news especially sport related stories. I am keen to support grass roots rugby.

I play rugby for Pontyberem and I have a good knowledge of the game. This is a great opportunity for me to work within the Gwendraeth Valley as a trainee reporter. I am a fluent Welsh speaker. I look forward to hearing about your news and events. You can email me at dafyddlloyd@llanellionline.news
